Lab-grown or natural?
The question is often presented as if one is better than the other. In reality, both are real diamonds, both can be beautiful and enduring, and both can become part of a deeply personal ring.
The difference lies mainly in their origin, rarity, price and the meaning that origin carries for you.
For some people, the idea of a diamond formed within the earth over an immense period of time is essential to the story. For others, the design of the ring, the gesture behind it and the person who will wear it matter far more than where the stone was formed.
There is no universally correct choice and you do not need to decide before beginning a bespoke engagement-ring commission. Choosing the stone is part of the process.

What is the same — and what is different?
Natural and lab-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness and optical properties.
Both are diamonds.
A lab-grown diamond is not a substitute such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. It is made from crystallised carbon, just like a natural diamond, and has the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale. When similarly cut, natural and lab-grown diamonds have the same brilliance and sparkle. Two stones of comparable quality can look identical to the naked eye.
The fundamental difference is their origin. Natural diamonds formed deep within the earth over immense geological periods, often more than a billion years ago.
Lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment over a period of weeks. The two main production methods are:
- HPHT, meaning high pressure and high temperature
- CVD, meaning chemical vapour deposition
These technologies produce the same diamond crystal structure, but their different growth histories leave microscopic characteristics that allow specialist gemmological laboratories to identify a diamond's origin.
For the person wearing the ring, however, the visible difference is not between a "real" and an "artificial" stone. Both are real diamonds. The question is what their different origins mean to you.
Why choose a natural diamond?
A natural diamond carries a geological history that is difficult to compare with anything else.
It formed deep within the earth long before human life as we know it. For some people, this idea of deep time, natural formation and rarity gives the stone a particular emotional weight.
Certain combinations of size, colour, clarity and cut can also be genuinely difficult to find. This is especially true for exceptional natural stones and rare natural colours. For some clients, that origin is central to the meaning of the ring. They want the stone itself to represent something ancient, finite and naturally formed.
Natural diamonds also have a more established secondary market than lab-grown diamonds. Their rarity contributes to how they are perceived and valued, but this does not mean that every natural diamond will retain or increase its financial value.
Resale depends on the individual stone, its quality, rarity and certification, as well as market conditions and how it is eventually sold. An engagement ring should not be chosen on the assumption that it is a guaranteed investment.
Its real value is usually more personal: the proposal, the design, the person who wears it and the life it becomes part of.

Why choose a lab-grown diamond?
A lab-grown diamond offers the appearance, brilliance and durability of a diamond at a substantially lower price than a comparable natural stone.
The exact difference depends on the stone's carat weight, cut, colour and clarity, as well as current market conditions. In general, however, choosing a lab-grown diamond allows you to consider a larger stone or a higher colour or clarity grade within the same budget.
It may also leave more room for the design and making of the ring itself. Rather than placing most of the budget into the centre stone, you may be able to invest more in the setting, the quantity of gold, the craftsmanship or a more sculptural bespoke form.
Lab-grown diamonds are available across a wide range of qualities. Like natural diamonds, they may contain inclusions and internal growth characteristics, so each stone should still be considered individually.
Their main limitation is that they do not currently have the same established secondary market as natural diamonds. Production has expanded quickly, and prices have changed as availability has increased.
This is worth understanding, particularly if future resale is important to you. For someone who intends to wear the ring, keep it and perhaps eventually pass it on, its resale value may matter much less than the quality, design and personal meaning of the finished piece.
Laura's note: For some clients, the meaning sits in the design, the gesture and the relationship rather than in the geological origin of the stone. A lab-grown diamond allows them to prioritise those things without giving up the appearance or durability of a diamond.
How the choice shapes a bespoke ring
In a bespoke commission, the stone and setting should be designed together. A diamond is not simply selected and placed into an unrelated form. Its shape, proportions, scale and character influence the entire ring.
A lab-grown diamond may allow you to choose a larger centre stone while keeping more of the budget available for a detailed or sculptural setting. A natural diamond within the same budget may mean choosing a smaller stone, balancing colour and clarity differently, or creating a simpler setting that allows the stone to remain the focus.
Neither approach is better. They simply reflect different priorities. You may decide that the natural origin of the stone is essential to the meaning of the ring. You may instead feel that the form, craftsmanship and relationship behind it are what matter most.
You may prefer a larger stone within a quiet setting, or a smaller stone within a more expressive piece of jewellery.
The value of a bespoke commission is that these decisions do not need to be made separately. The stone and the ring can develop together.
Questions to consider
Before choosing, it may help to ask yourself:
- Does the natural origin of the diamond carry emotional meaning for you?
- How important is the visual size of the stone?
- Would you rather invest more in the diamond or in the making of the ring?
- Does future resale matter, or is the ring intended to be kept and passed on?
- How important are traceability and information about the supply chain?
- Does the person who will wear the ring already have a preference?
- What do you want the ring to represent in twenty years?
These questions are often more useful than asking which type of diamond is objectively better.

What about coloured diamonds?
Both natural and lab-grown diamonds can be found in colours including yellow, pink, blue, green and brown.
Natural coloured diamonds can be exceptionally rare, particularly when the colour is strong and evenly distributed. Vivid natural pink and blue diamonds, for example, can be extremely valuable.
Lab-grown coloured diamonds are generally more accessible and are available in an increasing variety of colours and qualities.
However, a coloured diamond is not always the most interesting choice simply because a design calls for colour.
Depending on the ring, a sapphire, spinel, tourmaline or another coloured gemstone may offer a more distinctive tone, proportion or character.
The right option depends on the exact colour you are drawn to, the durability the ring requires, the available budget and the overall feeling of the design.

Which is more sustainable?
The environmental comparison between natural and lab-grown diamonds is more complex than it may first appear.
Lab-grown diamonds do not require traditional diamond mining, but the HPHT and CVD processes use significant amounts of energy. Their environmental impact depends heavily on where and how that energy is produced.
A diamond grown using renewable energy may have a very different footprint from one produced using electricity generated from fossil fuels.
Natural diamond mining can involve substantial land use, energy consumption and water use. Its impact also varies considerably between individual mines, locations and companies.
Improvements in responsible sourcing and traceability can provide greater transparency, but the word "natural" does not automatically mean environmentally responsible.
Equally, "lab-grown" does not automatically mean sustainable. A lab-grown diamond may offer more size for the same budget, but it should not automatically be assumed to have a lower environmental impact. The more useful questions are:
- Who produced or mined the diamond?
- Where did it come from?
- What energy source was used?
- What traceability information is available?
- What evidence supports the sustainability claims?
Neither category is automatically the more ethical or sustainable option. It depends on the individual producer, mine and supply chain.

They may contain inclusions and growth-related characteristics. Every diamond should be assessed individually rather than assumed to be flawless because it was grown in a laboratory.
Which option is better for the environment?
Neither option is automatically better in every case.
The impact of a lab-grown diamond depends heavily on the energy used to produce it. The impact of a natural diamond depends on the mine, extraction methods and supply chain.
If sustainability is important to you, ask for specific information about the producer, mine, energy source and traceability rather than relying only on the labels "natural" or "lab-grown."
Which should I choose for a bespoke engagement ring?
A natural diamond may be right for you if its geological history, rarity and origin carry personal meaning.
A lab-grown diamond may be right if you want to prioritise the size or quality of the stone, or invest more of the budget in the design and making of the ring.
There is no universally better choice. It comes down to what matters most to you and to the person who will wear it.
